OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Standard

Manage policies, minimise risk to employees, improve health and safety, demonstrate diligence, train people and prove compliance.

OHSAS 18001 is an Occupational Health and Safety Assessment series for health and safety management systems. The standard is applicable to any organisation that wishes to eliminate or minimize risk to employees and other stakeholders who may be exposed to OH&S risks associated with its activities.

Organisations who wish to implement OHSAS 18001 need to have a clear management structure with defined authority and responsibility, clear objectives for improvement, with measurable results and a structured approach to risk assessment. This includes the monitoring of health and safety management failures, auditing of performance and review of policies and objectives.

Manage OHSAS 18001 Policies and Procedures

The first step that companies need to take is the implementation of a system that can provide a platform to keep track of large polices which are being continuously revised and improved by the authorities. jComply provides such a platform in which managers can create their own policies and procedures and save them in the document library for easy access. The version control feature of the document library ensures that only the latest version of the document is available for editing and distribution.

OHSAS 18001 Training

Once the policies and procedures have been distributed to the relevant employees through jComply automated system the managers can use the eLearning module to test and train the employees. The employees can access the policies during training and can take training in their own time and convenience. Once they have passed the training stage managers can test them to check the company’s compliance level.

Risk Assessment

jComply risk assessment module is a fully integrated module that allows organisations to identify, analyse, monitor and mitigate risks that may affect an organisation’s business goals and objectives. In certain areas such as health and safety (ISO 18001), it is a legal requirement by HSE to assess the risks in workplace and put health and safety measures in place.

The Question Library within jComply allows risk managers to declare weightage and scoring against questions. The system launches the risk assessments using built-in workflow, issues email notifications, maintains full audit trail, generate management reports and log action tasks against the identified risks. Each action task is allocated to an individual with a due date and is tracked to completion with email alerts and escalations. The system generates a risk graph that plots the identified risks against the organisation’s risk threshold levels.
